Quick fire 10 with Toby Miles

​"The more you put in the more you will get out"

I had a few questions to ask Toby Miles, managing consultant in Hong Kong, and he shared some great advice for someone just getting into recruitment and how he keeps a work/life balance.

1. How did you get into recruitment?

After graduating from university, I had a couple of graduate job interviews and none of them really interested me. My friend who worked in recruitment suggested I look into it. I had a couple of interviews and the prospect of earning double/triple what the graduate jobs were offering really interested me.


2. What is your advice for someone just getting into recruitment?

Don’t be scared to get on the phone, your first day in the office you might pick up the phone and think to yourself “what if I say something wrong?” “What if I make a mistake?”

Don’t worry about it, even if you do make a mistake it’s completely fine! Pretty much everyone has made a mistake on the phone and 9 times out of 10 the people you think are listening to you are just focusing on their own work.

3. What is it about recruitment that has kept you in the industry?

For me, it was the perks, compensation and global mobility.

4. What is your proudest moment in your career to date?

When I had my first big commission cheque. I bought my mom a new car with it.


5. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far and how have you overcome that?

The transition from the UK to HK. I was leaving a fully developed network behind to build my new one from scratch. I overcome this overtime by building my network bigger than it was in the UK.


6. What is your number 1 secret to success?

Staying motivated and focusing on the goals that you have set yourself.


7. What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

The more you put in the more you will get out


8. What are you driven by and how do you stay motivated?

I am driven by seeing my team grow and us being recognised as the go-to recruiters for our specialism.


9. How do you keep a work / life balance?

By working with the right people. I have made some of my closest friends in recruitment. If you like the people that you work with, it doesn’t always feel like work (cheesy I know)


10. Why Eames?
