“Keep your head down, be honest, true and know your market.”

I had a few questions to ask Hazel Rowe, regional audit head in Singapore, and she shared the challenges she has faced, how she has overcome them and the proudest moments of her career.

1. How did you get into recruitment?
I fell into recruitment as I started working as a branch assistant for a High Street agency and then worked my way up into a permanent consultant position.

2. What is your advice for someone just getting into recruitment?
Have patience and don’t expect everything just to come to you. You can't be just a keyboard warrior.

3. What is it about recruitment that has kept you in the industry?
It's given me the opportunity to move my role to Singapore

4. What is your proudest moment in your career to date?
Moving to Singapore. Before I moved I was getting the 5 AM train to London for 6 months and working the Asia market to make sure it worked and I was very successful.

I also had my biggest year billing over a million dollars and have met some amazing people that are now lifelong friends.

5. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far and how have you overcome that?
Wow too many! Lehmans crash, 9/11, Covid for starters!

Every day you're faced with challenges; you just must have empathy and be able to adapt to each individual's needs whether a client or candidate, keep your cool and try not to be too emotional.

6. What is your number 1 secret to success?
Keep your head down, be honest, true and know your market.

7. What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?
An old manager pointed to his ears then his mouth and informed me you have two of these and one of this. So basically listen!

8. What are you driven by and how do you stay motivated?
I'm driven by living in a great country and doing well in my job so I can continue to have the opportunity to stay here and have a great life.

9. How do you keep a work/life balance?
I leave my job at work now, for many years I didn’t know how to switch off; exercise is very important to me and I do various weekend activities and normally travel a lot.

10. Why Eames?
To be honest I’ve always felt agencies were much the same but I initially liked it here because I work with some good people who are actually subject matter experts and where audit crosses over all specialisms this really compliments my market. Then the training we do which suits us all at all different ages and levels, global support, everyone knows who we all are and I can always call on someone which includes looking after my general well-being, hence why I've been here so long! I’ve never had that at a previous company.
