"It’s important to remain a sponge in this industry and be prepared to be constantly learning and evolving just like the industry I work in!"

I had a few questions to ask Laura Bellamy, principal consultant on the Technology and Change Management team in the UK and she shared her advice for someone just getting into recruitment, overcoming challenges and how she stays motivated.

1. How did you get into recruitment?

I joined recruitment from the hospitality industry. I was recommended to my previous organisation by a friend who said recruitment would be perfect for me because I love talking to people and here we are 5 years later…

2. What is your advice for someone just getting into recruitment?

Remaining resilient and persevering through the harder times. Recruitment is an extremely rewarding career however when you’re first starting out, you can come up against some setbacks and it’s just about learning from them and continuing to grow.

3. What is it about recruitment that has kept you in the industry?

For me, it is the specialism I work in. Working across change and technology within the insurance industry is extremely interesting as you place people into roles that have a significant effect on the way organisations operate.

4. What is your proudest moment in your career to date?

Starting Eames as an Associate Consultant and working my way through to Principal Consultant.

5. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far and how have you overcome that?

Transitioning from purely contract recruitment into more permanent recruitment as the process is very different! This has been made much easier by utilising our training function available to us internally and leaning on senior employers in the organisation for advice when needed.

6. What is your number 1 secret to success?

It’s no secret, you get out what you put in so working hard, staying positive and ORGANISATION IS KEY!

7. What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

This constantly evolves throughout my career, so there really is no one thing. It’s important to remain a sponge in this industry and be prepared to be constantly learning and evolving just like the industry I work in!

8. What are you driven by and how do you stay motivated?

In the current climate, what is really keeping me motivated is helping people in perhaps their struggles in the job market whether that be placing them into a new role, CV advice or just some market intel. Personally, I am driven by my future, the things I can do and the experiences I can gain based on the platform I am given at Eames.

9. What do you think you would have been had you not gone into recruitment?

Gosh, the list is endless…vet, hairdresser, doctor, I even wanted to be a sports commentator at one point!

Luckily for everyone, I never pursued any of the above.

10. Why Eames?

The people, the brand, the opportunities, the platform. There are so many reasons I would choose Eames over and over again!
