"Eames look beyond just plain old recruitment. We prioritize the relationships we build with our clients and candidates."

I had a few questions to ask Sarah Tan, senior technology consultant in Singapore and she shared her advice for someone just getting into recruitment, the challenges she has faced why she chose to work at Eames.

1. How did you get into recruitment?
Honestly, quite accidentally. I graduated with a Biomedical Science degree so was looking for any jobs related to this field and ended up applying for a Life Sciences recruiter role. I have done sales before so I decided to give this role a try, and thankfully I really enjoy it!

2. What is your advice for someone just getting into recruitment?
“It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

4. What is the proudest moment in your career to date?
It would have been building up the cyber security desk from scratch back in my previous firm and becoming the top biller in Singapore there.

5. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far and how have you overcome that?
My biggest challenge was having to start the cyber security desk all on my own with no clients, no database and no knowledge. It was pure hard work, putting in the hours, calling any security people I could find, and asking all the questions under the sun. 3 years in this market and I still have so much to learn! It is challenging, but so exciting and fulfilling.

6. What is your number one secret to success?
I believe in hard work and discipline, it makes the most sense mathematically and it is something very achievable if you want it bad enough. Yes, I am a very logical person!!!

7. What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?
Someone once told me “if you don’t ask, you don’t get” and it stuck with me ever since. If you need help, ask. Also, something relatable, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.

8. What are you driven by, and how do you stay motivated?
I am highly driven by rewards in all forms, even just simple words of appreciation and acknowledgement. I am motivated by the people I am constantly surrounded with – colleagues, clients and candidates. I am always around colleagues I look up to and aspire to become, and I work with clients and candidates that I feel a sense of responsibility for.

9. How do you keep a work-life balance?
It is difficult especially when we are all working from home now and our personal and work lives are so intertwined. But I have to just tell myself sometimes that my work never really ends, so I should just call it a day and start again tomorrow. Sometimes taking a break is necessary to accomplish a longer journey! My favourite way to take a break is indulging in a very good meal with my loved ones. I am always excited to learn about good food or any food deals, especially crab!!!

10.Why Eames?
Eames look beyond just plain old recruitment. We prioritize the relationships we build with our clients and candidates. On top of day to day recruitment tasks, I am constantly challenged to think beyond the current market I am handling, beyond just routine work. It is also a very collaborative environment where people are very helpful, and it makes me want to help my colleagues whenever I can too.
